On the Precipice explores a moment of transition, uncertainty, and possibility. Through an abstract visual language, Anastasia Pelias creates a composition that balances tension and movement, suggesting the experience of standing at the threshold between what is known and what lies ahead. Layers of color, mark-making, and spatial relationships draw viewers into a dynamic field where forms appear to emerge, shift, and dissolve, reflecting the fluid nature of perception and change.
Rather than depicting a specific narrative, the work invites contemplation and personal interpretation. The title evokes a sense of anticipation, capturing the emotional complexity of moments poised between stability and transformation. Through the interplay of structure and spontaneity, Pelias encourages viewers to reflect on their own experiences of risk, growth, and discovery.
Like much of the artist’s practice, On the Precipice engages with the expressive potential of abstraction while remaining grounded in observation and material presence. The result is a visually immersive work that rewards close looking and reveals new relationships and meanings over time.
Pelias’s process is rooted in observation, intuition, and a sustained engagement with abstraction. Working across painting, drawing, installation, and mixed media, she develops compositions through the gradual layering of marks, color, and material, allowing each work to evolve organically over time. Rather than imposing a predetermined image, Pelias embraces discovery, responding to the relationships that emerge between form, space, and surface as the piece develops.
In On the Precipice, this process of accumulation and transformation creates a visual sense of movement and possibility. Through the interplay of gesture, color, and spatial tension, the composition captures a moment suspended between stability and change. Layers of marks suggest both construction and erosion, reflecting the artist’s interest in transition, uncertainty, and the ever-changing nature of experience.
By balancing deliberate decision-making with improvisation, Pelias creates works that remain open-ended and dynamic. Her process encourages close observation, inviting viewers to engage with the painting as a record of exploration where meaning emerges through looking, reflection, and personal interpretation
