Mai Wyn Schantz explores the beauty and energy of the natural world through a contemporary visual language. Inspired by landscapes and organic forms, the composition captures a sense of movement, light, and connection to nature while balancing realism with abstraction. The work invites viewers to pause and immerse themselves in the shifting patterns, colors, and rhythms found in the environment.
A distinctive aspect of Schantz’s work is her use of stainless steel as a painting surface. Areas of exposed metal interact with painted passages, creating a dynamic contrast between industrial material and nature-based imagery. This interplay allows the artwork to change subtly with light and viewing angle, adding depth and luminosity to the composition.
Through the fusion of natural subject matter and contemporary materials, the artwork reflects both the enduring beauty of the landscape and the complex relationship between the natural and built worlds. The result is a work that feels both contemplative and vibrant, encouraging viewers to experience nature from a fresh perspective.
Mai Wyn Schantz’s process is distinguished by her use of stainless steel as a painting surface, a material she has worked with for more than twenty-five years. Initially attracted to its smooth, reflective qualities, she developed a technique that intentionally leaves portions of the metal exposed, allowing the industrial surface to become an active part of the composition. This creates a unique dialogue between the painted imagery and the reflective substrate beneath it.
Drawing inspiration from landscapes and the natural world, Schantz builds her paintings through layers of oil paint that interact with the polished metal surface. Light plays a significant role in the finished work, as exposed areas of stainless steel shift and change with the viewer’s perspective and surrounding environment. This dynamic quality gives her paintings a sense of movement and luminosity that cannot be achieved on a traditional canvas.
By combining contemporary materials with nature-based imagery, Schantz creates works that explore the relationship between the built and natural worlds. Her process transforms landscape into a modern visual experience, balancing organic forms, atmospheric color, and reflective surfaces to create paintings that feel immersive, vibrant, and contemplative.
