Sloan’s work centers on carefully observed still lifes, often featuring domestic objects with reflective surfaces such as metal cups and bowls. As noted by Allison King, she uses visible reality as a starting point, transforming everyday objects into complex, tightly cropped compositions that blur the line between realism and abstraction.
Her artistic direction shifted in the 1970s while painting in her kitchen as a young mother, when she became fascinated by reflections in a toaster. Since then, she has explored how reflections distort and multiply space, creating intricate patterns and layered visual experiences.
In her more recent work, influenced by her home in Santa Fe, Sloan incorporates desert elements such as sunflowers and cacti into her compositions, integrating natural forms with her signature reflective surfaces.
Jeanette Pasin Sloan was born in 1946 in Chicago. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Marymount College and her Master of Fine Arts from University of Chicago. Sloan now lives and works in Santa Fe.
Her work is included in major collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Yale University Art Gallery, among others. A painter and prolific printmaker for more than 35 years, she created Trine (2019), her first fine art print collaboration with Stewart & Stewart.
