Enrique Chagoya is a Mexican-born American artist, printmaker, and educator whose work explores the intersection of cultures, histories, and belief systems. Born in Mexico City in 1953, he draws upon experiences living in both Mexico and the United States, creating artworks that blend elements of popular culture, historical imagery, politics, and social commentary.
Before pursuing art full-time, Chagoya studied political economy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. After moving to California, he earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the University of California, Berkeley. These diverse experiences continue to inform his distinctive artistic practice.
Known for his inventive visual storytelling, Chagoya often combines imagery from ancient Mesoamerican traditions, contemporary popular culture, religion, and historical sources. His work invites viewers to examine issues of identity, colonialism, cultural exchange, and the ways societies construct meaning.
