About the Process

My medium is mineral based limestone plasters made in Italy. My technique can most be related to a “Fresco”. In the traditional sense my technique is the same however it’s applied to a rigid lightweight panel instead of a wall or ceiling. I begin with rolling on two coats of mineral based primer to a panel. I then apply a layer of Marmorino plaster with a trowel. Mamorino is venetian plaster with marble dust added. Marmorino with the added marble aggregate is matte with a subtle shimmer and the Venetian more smooth and shiny. Acrylic pigments were added to the marmorino in a blue black as the next layer. This was the sky and under the water in the foreground. I taped off a line and added white venetian (the limestone plaster is naturally white) to the foreground. Before it completely dried I sprinkled water and flicked pigment into and let it naturally flow as if it was snowmelt. The mountains were added next. I mix pigment in with venetian plaster and apply it with a pallete knife. I hid the parthenon by the means of taping off the outline of the structure, then filling in the negative space. I added the moon by using tape as a stencil. When all the layers had dried, a mineral oil, beeswax emulsion is applied. It soaks into the plaster enhancing the color and when buffed, the layers telegraph through eachother. Each process / layer that is applied dries overnight.
