Tricia Rissmann’s love of painting is deeply connected to a lifelong appreciation for design, architecture, and music. From an early age, Rissmann has been drawn to color, balance, shape, texture, and form, using these elements to create unexpected harmony within her work.
Her paintings serve as portals, inviting viewers into journeys she has first traveled herself. Each piece reflects the complexities of human emotion, thoughtfully explored and contained within layered compositions that balance intuition with structure.
At the heart of Rissmann’s practice is a desire to excavate mystery. She seeks to uncover what cannot be easily explained, exploring the alchemy that exists beyond technique and the limitations of preconceived imagery. Her work embraces experimentation, allowing discovery and transformation to emerge through the creative process.
Working primarily with acrylic paint, oil, plaster, chalk, and putty, Rissmann incorporates a wide range of materials, often using whatever inspires her in the moment. Past works have even included unconventional elements such as wine and coffee grounds, adding depth and unexpected texture to her surfaces.
Through the process of building layer upon layer, Rissmann creates relationships between disparate elements, unifying them into cohesive compositions. The resulting works embody both strength and vulnerability, inviting viewers to engage with the mystery, emotion, and beauty found within each painted surface.
Tricia Rissmann found the creation of this artwork for Imagery to be an especially rewarding experience. Working with a combination of plaster and moss green oil paint, Rissmann built the piece through multiple layers, carefully sanding between applications to create depth, texture, and movement.
The work was inspired by the interconnectedness of the vineyard ecosystem, exploring the relationships between the vines, leaves, grapes, water, and soil. This intricate balance and reliance between each element served as the foundation for the composition and creative process.
Titled Revive, the piece reflects themes of renewal, growth, and resilience. Through layered textures and organic forms, Rissmann captures the vitality of the vineyard and the continuous cycle of life that sustains it.
