Rachel Campbell was inspired by memories of holidays in France, where visits to a local vineyard marked the end of each summer before returning to England, where Rachel Campbell was living at the time. The final lingering days of summer were spent walking among the grapevines, their branches heavy with ripening fruit. There was a sense of magic in strolling through the vineyard alongside an old vintner, listening to stories of generations of winemaking and learning about the journey from grape to bottle.
Rachel Campbell chose a design that offered a relatively literal interpretation of vineyard vines and leaves, while allowing room for creative exploration through color and layering. Working in acrylic, a fast-drying medium, enabled Rachel Campbell to make adjustments easily and build successive layers of color throughout the composition. This approach helped create a sense of depth and dimension within the otherwise flat design, using variations in tone and overlapping forms to evoke different planes of focus.
