Gregory Kondos painted the perceived colors of his environment, drawing inspiration from locations such as Northern California forests, Yosemite National Park, and the shores of his ancestral Greece. He is best known for his landscape paintings, often depicting California’s Sacramento Valley and coastal regions.
Kondos frequently collaborated with his close friend, artist Wayne Thiebaud, who described his technique as “a kind of brush dancing.” His work was influenced by artists including Maynard Dixon, Willem de Kooning, Paul Cézanne, and Paul Gauguin.
Gregory Kondos (1923–2021) was born in Massachusetts and raised in California, where he studied art and later taught at Sacramento City College (1956–1982). A celebrated painter, he exhibited widely, became a Full Academician at the National Academy of Design, and was an artist-in-residence at Yosemite. He lived in Sacramento with his wife, Moni Van Camp.
