In Lion, Laura Ball presents a powerful meditation on strength, instinct, and the interconnectedness of the natural world. Rendered in her distinctive watercolor style, the lion emerges as both a tangible creature and a symbolic presence, inhabiting a dreamlike space that blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination. Delicate layers of color, fluid forms, and intricate details create a sense of movement and transformation, encouraging viewers to look beyond the animal’s physical form and consider its deeper symbolic meaning.
Rather than portraying the lion solely as a majestic predator, Ball evokes qualities of resilience, wisdom, and quiet authority. The composition reflects her interest in the subconscious, combining elements from memory, observation, and imagination to create a visual narrative that feels both personal and universal. Through its balance of strength and vulnerability, Lion invites contemplation of humanity’s relationship with the natural world and the enduring power of wild creatures to inspire awe and reflection.
Drawing from childhood memories, daily observations, dreams, and the collective unconscious, Laura Ball’s work creates imaginative landscapes with limitless potential for interpretation. Lion exemplifies this approach, transforming a familiar subject into a richly layered exploration of symbolism, memory, and wonder
Ball’s artistic process is rooted in exploration, intuition, and technical mastery of watercolor. Beginning with spontaneous drawings and observations, she develops intricate compositions that draw from childhood memories, daily experiences, dreams, and the subconscious mind. Working layer by layer, Ball allows fluid washes of color and delicate linework to evolve organically across the surface, creating richly detailed images that balance control with unpredictability.
For works such as Lion, Ball blends careful observation of the natural world with imaginative elements that emerge through the creative process. Rather than creating a straightforward representation, she constructs symbolic visual narratives in which animals, landscapes, and abstract forms coexist within an expansive dreamlike environment. The resulting imagery reflects what Ball describes as an evolving map of the subconscious, where personal memories and universal themes intersect. Through this layered approach, the work invites viewers to discover new meanings and connections with each encounter.
