James Brown (1951–2020), born in Los Angeles, studied at Immaculate Heart College and the École des Beaux-Arts. He later worked in New York City alongside artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring before moving to Oaxaca in 1995. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou.
