Arneson was a leading figure in the Funk Art movement, transforming ceramics into an expressive, concept-driven medium. Known for figurative and often humorous sculptures, he frequently used self-portraiture to explore identity and the human condition, later incorporating political themes and references to artists like Jackson Pollock.
Robert Arneson (1930–1992) was born in Benicia. He studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and earned his MFA at Mills College under Antonio Prieto. He later taught at the University of California, Davis for nearly 30 years.
